The University of the East (UE) recently welcomed a very special guest from the world of digital comics--Sharleen Dee Sy, CEO, CTO, and Co-Founder of HALO-HALO Corporation. Halo-Halo is a global comic-sharing app that features a growing collection of stories, original comics, and reimagined legends from the Philippines and around the world. It is a digital platform where artists and writers can publish their comics, discover works from other creators, and build their fan communities.

The visit marks an exciting milestone, as UE becomes one of the first institutions in the Philippines to establish an engagement with the app, giving student storytellers a chance to showcase their work on an international platform.
CCSS KoMIX Jam: A CELEBRATION OF ART, STORIES, AND STUDENT TALENT
Sharleen’s visit came just in time for the 37th Foundation Celebration of the College of Computer Studies and Systems (CCSS), as CCSS KoMIX Jam was added as part of the festivities. CCSS KoMIX Jam is a live comic creation challenge participated in by CCSS students who formed teams of 2 to 4 members. Participants were tasked with creating comic panels based on a mystery theme revealed at the start of the contest. The event was spearheaded by Prof. Roselle Basa, Prof. Reynalyn Elon, and Prof. John Reynald Degamo, in collaboration with the EMSCS student organization.
Sharleen served as the distinguished judge for the contest. Through the power of technology, she was able to view and score the participants’ works remotely. With her help, the winners were selected, and a celebration will soon follow.

UE Joins the Halo-Halo Universe
In another exciting development, Sharleen’s team will create a group space for the University of the East in the HALO HALO app. This dedicated space will allow UE students to publish, collaborate, and showcase their original comics to a wider audience. Sharleen shared that the feature is almost ready and will go live once the latest version of the app is made available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
The first wave of content will feature entries from the UE KoMiX JAM, officially marking UE’s creative footprint in the HALO-HALO universe.
What’s Next?
UE’s upcoming presence in the Halo-Halo app marks a huge step forward for the university’s aspiring storytellers and comic creators. While the contest has concluded, the opportunity for UE talents to be seen, read, and celebrated is just beginning.
